Another sunny April means another Milan Design Week – the annual Italian celebration of furniture and product design that draws crowds from across the globe. Before we get started with more in-depth posts on individual shows and installations, here is a flavor of some of the highlights from this year’s festival.
Founder Matteo Franceschetti left the life of a lawyer to change the world through successful business ventures. This meant a change in scheduling, a faster paced lifestyle, and unfortunately, a loss of sleep.
The word “design” typically evokes images of hand-drawn sketches, color palettes, computer modeling or visually stunning products or space. But we want to explore the role of design beyond its conventional take. Good design can have the power to shape behavior, and even transform lives.
Embrace the laughter and the games, the contradictions and the friction, the reading and the listening, the sleeping and the take-out eating. Today, the living room has space for both our needs and our dreams. Accepting and welcoming it all makes for a richer and better life.

In the courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi, the capital of Catalonia is displaying its creative potential with an exhibition curated by Emiliana Design Studio. “In & Out” is the subtitle chosen by the curators Ana Mir and Emili Padrós (both 1969), aiming to describe how the citizens of Barcelona like to live outdoors.
